Pop Rock Audition Songs for Footloose: Channel Your Inner 80s Star

Yo! How's it hangin', dude?

Welcome back to The Pop Rock Coach, your ultimate destination for audition tips and performance vibes. I'm Heather, The Pop Rock Coach, and I'm thrilled to have you join me on a journey back to the totally rad world of 80s pop rock in musical theatre—MY ERA! 🎸

Today, it's all about Footloose auditions, and if you're ready to "cut loose and kick off those Sunday shoes" in style, you're in for a treat.

The Footloose Backstory

For those of you who don't know the movie “Footloose” backwards and forwards like my sister and I do, let's do a quick recap. Footloose tells the story of Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon), a teenager from Chicago who moves to the small town of Bomont, where dancing is banned. The town's conservative nature is personified by the local minister, Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgow), who has enforced the ban to protect the town's youth after a tragic accident. Ren, with his rebellious spirit and love for dance, challenges this rule, fighting for the right to express himself and bring joy back to the community.

The musical adaptation, born in 1998 and set in the 80s, keeps the essence of the era alive with its infectious energy and unforgettable music. The '80s were all about big hair, shoulder pads, and, of course, rad music. Understanding the musical genre helps us pick the right songs that capture the small-town, working-for-the-weekend, everyman feel of the 80s, and that's the energy we want to bring to your Footloose audition.

Understanding 80s Music

The '80s were a time of musical experimentation and diversity. From synth-driven pop to heart-wrenching power ballads, the era produced a wide array of sounds that defined a generation. The music was characterized by its catchy hooks, bold lyrics, and unforgettable beats. Footloose captures this vibrant energy, and to nail your audition, you'll need to channel these vibes.

Our list of audition songs represents the different styles of 80s music, each bringing a unique flavor to the table. Whether it's the rebellious spirit of rock anthems or the emotional depth of power ballads, these songs are designed to showcase your versatility and connection to the era. Let's dive into the suggestions!

The Audition Songs

Alright, let's cut to the chase—Song Suggestions!

We've handpicked 10 pop-rock gems from the 80s that not only rock the '80s vibe but also resonate with the heart of Footloose. It's not just about hitting those high notes; it's about connecting with your audience. Let's dance on in.

1. "Angel of the Morning" - Juice Newton

Juice Newton's "Angel of the Morning" kicks things off with a sweet touch, serving up that perfect country flavor and heartfelt vibe. This slow burner gives you the chance to flex those vocal skills and dive deep into emotions right from the get-go. It's like stepping into Ariel's shoes, feeling her highs and lows in a town that's all anti-dance.

2. "Working for the Weekend" - Loverboy

Loverboy's anthem, "Working for the Weekend," isn't just about the grind—it's a total Friday night vibe. It's that high-energy track that brings the party wherever it goes. Think of it like Ren McCormack—breaking the rules and shaking things up in Beaumont. This song's all about liberation, capturing that rebellious spirit at the heart of Footloose.

3. "What About Love" - Heart

Heart's power ballad dives into the emotional rollercoaster of relationships, just like in Footloose. It mirrors the heartfelt emotions of love and sacrifice, showcasing themes of compassion and empathy in the storyline. And hey, fun fact alert! Mike Reno of Loverboy and Ann Wilson of Heart teamed up for "Almost Paradise" in Footloose, so picking one of these tunes shows you're clued in on your musical history!

4. "I'm So Excited" - The Pointer Sisters

The Pointer Sisters' track is all about that electric rush and defying norms—just like in Footloose. It captures the electrifying energy and joy of breaking barriers, echoing the excitement felt by the characters in Footloose when challenging the status quo.

5. "Forever" - Kenny Loggins

Kenny Loggins' "Forever" has that timeless, romantic vibe. It's all about showcasing your softer side and really pouring out those emotions. This slow dance-worthy tune lets you connect intimately with the audience. It reflects the tender moments and depth of love seen in the relationships of the musical, showing love's power to overcome anything. Another fun fact: Kenny Loggins is the artist behind the title track of “Footloose”

6. "I'm Still Standing" - Elton John

Elton John's anthem isn't just a song; it's a bold statement, kinda like Ren standing tall against the town's strict rules. It embodies that unwavering strength and courage, reflecting the triumph over adversity. It's your chance to channel Ren's determination and strength, belting out "I'm still standing!"—show 'em that resilience!

7. "Right Here Waiting" - Richard Marx

Richard Marx's ballad is a total heartstring tugger. It mirrors those heartfelt moments of yearning and hope, kinda like the vibe in Footloose. It's your chance to show off your emotional range and vocal skills. Oh, and it's got that nostalgia factor—I remember dedicating this one to my high school sweetheart too!

8. "Edge of Seventeen" - Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks' rock masterpiece is all about drama and intensity—seriously gripping stuff. It's your chance to command attention and take the audition room to the edge! "Edge of Seventeen" mirrors those intense and transformative moments in Footloose, reflecting the raw emotions and challenges the characters face.

9. "She Works Hard for the Money" - Donna Summer

Donna Summer's anthem is all about celebrating hard work and independence—total powerhouse vibes! It resonates with the characters hustling in Footloose, striving for independence and breaking free from the grind. It celebrates resilience and determination, aligning perfectly with the themes of hard work and perseverance in the musical.

10. "Rhythm of the Night" - DeBarge

Closing out with a bang, DeBarge's rhythm is pure dance-floor magic! It's your chance to showcase those killer dance moves and leave a lasting impression.
