Howdy, future rockstars!
Have you ever dreamed of starting your own band? Or even just joining a band? If so, you’re in the right place!
I didn’t dive into the world of singing with a band until my mid-30s, and let me tell you, I made plenty of mistakes along the way—a TON! But those mistakes became lessons (and I’m still learning and will still make mistakes and still learn…), and now I’m here to share what I wish I had known back then. No matter your age or experience, this guide is for anyone passionate about music, whether your goal is to play at local events or just have fun with friends.
Remember, even if you follow these steps, challenges will still arise because we’re all human. And learning how to deal with those challenges is one of the better measurements of success. So, embrace the creative process, realize this IS a PROCESS, and enjoy the journey!

Setting the Stage: Define Your Goals and Music Style
Before you dive into the world of band life, take a moment to set the stage for your musical adventure. What do you envision for your band? Are you aiming for sold-out arenas or cozy local gigs? Defining your goals will help shape your band’s path. And don’t forget about your music style. Embrace what makes you unique—it’s your signature in the vast musical landscape.
Now, I’d love to tell you a story about how my band did this successfully, but as I mentioned earlier, I made a ton of mistakes, and this was one of them! We didn’t have a clear vision for the band. We knew we enjoyed playing and making music together, and somehow thought that was enough. Spoiler alert—it wasn’t.
I think people (myself included) get caught up in the “dream” or “coolness” of being in a band and think that any type of agreement or goal-setting somehow dampens the creative spirit, and you might “lose the magic.” The truth? It’s completely the opposite! If you have ANY desire to have longevity with a band, even on the local level, you need to have goals, and everyone at least needs to be on the same page. And if you’re starting this on your own, spend some time deciding the direction of your band in the beginning, before you even play a lick of music!
Finding Your Bandmates: Assemble Your Superhero Squad

Finding the right bandmates is like assembling a superhero squad. Look for musicians who not only have the skills but also personalities that click with yours. The chemistry between band members is crucial—it’s the magic that turns a group of individuals into a cohesive unit. Hold auditions, jam together, and find those who share your vision and passion for music. If you’ve already defined your band’s direction and goals, it’s easier to find like-minded folks. If your goal is to play Southern Swamp Rock, then someone who is well-versed in K-Pop might not be the best fit.
Tip: Don’t rush this process. It’s better to take your time and find the right fit than to settle for the first available option or to prioritize technical skill over personality. When I was at a crossroads with one band, trying to decide what to do next, I reached out to a professional musician friend of mine for advice. He said, “Heather, you can always find someone who can work to be a better drummer, guitarist, whatever instrument you need, but if they’re an A-hole, they’ll always be an A-hole.” Truer words have never been spoken!
Scheduling Rehearsals: Jam Like There’s No Tomorrow
Once you’ve found your bandmates, it’s time to schedule rehearsals with the dedication of a pro athlete. Regular practice is the secret to tight, polished performances. Set a consistent rehearsal schedule and stick to it. This not only improves your skills but also strengthens your bond as a band.
When I was first starting with a new band, we had the luxury of having very open and flexible schedules that allowed us to have long rehearsals weekly for several months. It was awesome! We got to know each other better, rehearsed in a very relaxed environment, and really got into a groove. When we finally played out, people were so impressed with how “tight” the band was! Our rehearsal time really paid off!
Assigning Roles: Everyone’s a Superhero
Assigning roles in the band might sound serious, but it can be fun too. Who’s the lead guitarist, the drumming powerhouse, or the social media guru? Play to each member’s strengths and foster a team spirit. Remember, every role is vital to the band’s success.
Tip: Rotate roles occasionally to give everyone a taste of different responsibilities and keep things fresh. For example, I think everyone should take a turn creating a set list. It’s also important to decide who will be responsible for starting and ending each song on stage.
Building Trust and Respect: Your Band is Your Family
Trust and respect are the foundation of any successful band. Treat your bandmates like family—support each other’s musical journeys and be ready to share the spotlight. A strong bond within the band will be reflected in your music and performances. Trust me, it makes a world of difference.

I love that I’ve had all kinds of different experiences with various band members over the years. They truly can become another family. My bandmates have visited me in the hospital when I had surgery, we’ve attended each other’s weddings, and we’ve shared the experience of winning and losing competitions together. No matter where our paths take us in the future, those experiences have bonded us together.
Embracing Challenges: The Creative Process
Even with the best preparation, challenges will arise. Embrace them as part of the creative process. Every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow. The goal isn’t always fame and fortune; sometimes, it’s just about making music and having fun.
Tip: Keep a positive attitude and encourage open communication to navigate challenges together. I also would add that establishing in the beginning HOW you are going to communicate with each other would be a huge help in setting a strong foundation for your band.
