What I Wish I Knew: Starting a Band in Your 30s and Beyond - Part 2

Welcome back, my fellow rockstars!

Part 1 covered defining your goals, finding the right bandmates, scheduling rehearsals, assigning roles, and building trust. Now, let's dive deeper into the heart of band dynamics and explore the remaining key aspects that will shape your musical destiny. Remember, this journey is about learning, growing, and having fun.

Embrace the process, and let’s keep rocking!

Embracing Constructive Feedback

One of the most valuable lessons I learned later than I would have liked is the importance of feedback. Be open to constructive criticism as if it were a high-five from the audience. It’s through feedback that you grow, improve, and ultimately shine on stage. Create an environment where constructive feedback is welcomed, and encourage your bandmates to do the same. This fosters a culture of continuous improvement and mutual respect.

My band, THUNDERGYPSY, was a part of the International Blues Challenge in 2018 which brought together blues bands and solos/duos from around the world into a week-long competition.  One of the comments on our judges' sheet was something like “didn't really hear a lot of great blues, but heard a lot of great Gospel and Soul”.  Well - honestly - GREAT!  We never really considered ourselves a true Blues Band, because our influence IS Gospel and Soul and Blues and Rock and R&B and all other types of music.  We don't just play the Blues.  It taught me that not everyone is going to like what you do… and that's ok!!

Setting Performance and Recording Milestones

Setting goals is essential, but breaking them down into manageable milestones is equally important. Dream big but start small. Whether it's performing at a local coffee shop or recording your first single, celebrate every achievement. These milestones are stepping stones to bigger stages and greater recognition. Each accomplishment, no matter how small, is a victory and a testament to your hard work.

Tip: Use a band journal or a shared online document to track your goals and celebrate your progress together.  I use to keep a running total of the band's gigs we had for the year and each year we tried to improve them by 10-20%

Effective Communication: Rock 'n' Roll Conflict Resolution

Communication is the glue that holds any band together. When conflicts arise – and they will – tackle them head-on with a rock 'n' roll spirit. Effective communication is key to resolving conflicts and maintaining harmony within the band. Address issues directly, listen to each other, and find common ground. Remember, your band is like a family, and families work through challenges together.

This part is where I made a TON of mistakes and I would caution anyone starting a band to agree on your methods of communication and decision-making BEFORE you start a band.  Honestly, before you even play a note!  Figure out HOW your band is going to handle conflicts before they even arise.  Because they WILL arise!

Marketing Your Band on Social Media

In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial. Market and promote your band like true social media influencers. Get creative with your content, connect with your fans, and let the world know about your musical journey. Social media is a powerful tool for building your brand and growing your fanbase. Share behind-the-scenes moments, updates, and interact with your audience to keep them engaged.

Tip: Designate a band member to manage your social media accounts, or take turns to keep the content fresh and diverse.

Continuous Growth and Experimentation

The music world is always evolving, and so should your band. Keep refining your sound and embrace the journey of growth. Practice regularly, experiment with new styles and techniques, and let your creativity soar. Rock 'n' roll is all about pushing boundaries, and your unique sound will be the driving force behind your band’s success.

In 2022, after eight years, one of our members left the band.  At first, it seemed like a devastating blow, but because of that change, our duo format actually grew bigger and we have been able to have an ongoing residency at a venue that the full band was never able to have.  This allows us to actually reach more people because we have more flexibility.  It's also given us an opportunity to include more songs in our repertoire and play with the arrangement because of the duo format.  A great opportunity that we might have not discovered!!
